Painting the walls in your bedroom can instantly change the feel of the room and make your walls transform from drab to cheerful. There are several pitfalls to hastily painting your walls that can be avoided with the proper preparation and a few informative tips. Schedule an entire day to prepare your bedroom walls. This will ensure that you do a thorough job and will inevitably lead to better-looking bedroom walls.
Instructions
1. Remove all of the furniture and wall decorations from the room and unscrew outlet covers. If the furniture cannot be moved, cover it with thick painters drop cloths. If your bed is too cumbersome to move, pull it into the center of the room and cover it with drop cloths. Cover the floor with drop cloths.
2. Prepare the walls. Sand down any bumps in the wall or drips from a former paint job. Clean your walls with a home cleaner that will remove oil and grease. Wash the walls down with a sponge that has been dampened in clean water. This will remove any residue that may complicate the painting process.
3. Cover the areas that will not be painted with painters' tape. In some cases, this would include covering the moldings or outlet covers that couldn't be removed. Place the tape along the edge of the ceiling if you are not painting the ceiling in your bedroom. Tape down the drop clothes on the floor to prevent them from exposing your bedroom floor.
4. Cut in with an angled brush. Dip the angled brush into the paint can so that one-third of the length of the brush is covered in paint. Gently shake off any excess paint into the paint can. Paint all of the corners in the bedroom including all of the corners in between the walls and the ceiling and the corners near the moldings. This will prevent you from trying to paint the corners with the roller.
5. Fill the trough of a roller tray with paint. Dip the roller into the trough and roll it over the grate to evenly distribute the paint. Squeeze out any excess paint so that the roller does not drip.
6. Use the roller to paint a W or M shape on the wall. Fill in the gaps with vertical strokes that overlap the W or M shape. This will prevent lines from showing when the paint dries.
7. Allow the paint to dry to the touch.
8. Repeat steps four and five if another coat of paint is needed. Allow the paint on your bedroom wall to dry completely before replacing any wall décor or bedroom furniture.
