A Vintage Feel To A Modern Bedroom

Add a touch of disco style to your contemporary bedroom.

With its sleek lines, monochromatic color scheme and minimal accessories, contemporary design can be a bit cold and uninviting. Using vintage touches gives the room an eclectic feel that adds personality as well as warming the room and making it more welcoming. Choose the retro décor style that appeals to you the most and introduce enough vintage items to make the space interesting but not so many that it becomes cluttered. Choose the vintage pieces carefully to be sure they both stand out and complement the bedroom's contemporary design.

Instructions

1. Switch out your headboard for one crafted from wicker or rattan for a British Colonial or plantation vibe. Hang a padded headboard covered with satin for a glamorous vintage Hollywood feel. Group metal trays from the 1950s above the bed. Choose those with floral or fruit designs in bright colors. For contrast, dress the bed in black, grey and white bedding with red accents like throw pillows or a cotton throw that pick up the trays' red hues. Think about covering the bed with a vintage chenille spread for a 1930s feel.

2. Replace a contemporary chrome framed chair covered in black leather with a simple Mission-style arm chair featuring cushions upholstered in neutral linen or weathered brown leather. The clean lines of the Mission-style chair complement the bedroom's modern furniture while still adding a vintage touch. Opt for a wicker chaise painted black with zebra print cushions. If the room is painted in a grey, black and white palette, the black and white animal print is the perfect complement, while the wicker chaise adds the feel of a Victorian porch.

3. Choose floor-length tab curtains hung on a wooden rod. Their simple lines echo the room's clean, contemporary vibe while adding a traditional, Colonial touch. Opt for plantation shutters like those found in a vintage southern mansion to block the light and heat of the day.

4. Cover the floor with back and white tiles like those found in a Victorian-style home. Add a retro mid-century flair with black or white shag area rugs.

5. Place a vintage steamer trunk at the foot of the bed to provide storage as well as a vintage 1920s touch.

6. Create a retro seventies mood with a disco ball suspended from the ceiling above your bed. Add a mirrored accent wall.

7. Evoke the rustic décor of vintage log cabin. Replace a piece of modern wall art with a quilt in a geometric design.
