Space Saving Ideas For A Kid'S Small Bedroom

Dual-purpose storage space.

Outfit kids' small bedrooms by utilizing dual-purpose furniture and accessories that re-purpose limited space by providing plenty of storage blended with fun. Beds tend to be the focal point of a small bedroom, so maximize the unused space underneath. Use the top shelves of a closet. Think of the walls as a clean slate to provide storage and a creative outlet for your child. As long as your child can reach it and put it away, be creative!

Wall Organizers

Keep kids busy with chalk.

Colored chalkboard paint and wall organizers create play space without floor clutter. Mark off at least a 2 by 3 foot section of wall, measuring from the baseboard up. Buy a chalkboard framing kit and paint the space within with chalkboard paint. Let dry. Refurbish old apron pockets for girls or metal containers for boys by hanging them on the wall within easy reach to store much-used toys. A piece of netting tacked in an upper corner provides plenty of stuffed animal storage.

Dual-Purpose Desks

Milk crates provides endless possibilities.

Milk crates topped with refinished wood give a child's room new life, with tons of storage options with desk space for art and homework. Any old, smooth door or piece of plywood will work as the desktop. Sand, stain or paint the wood to create rounded corners for younger children. Place the wood atop as many crates as you want to use for the desk foundation, leaving room for a chair to slide under the desk. Use decorative binding to keep the crates in place and secure the desktop to the crates. Make sure the crates face open and out, so that they can be filled with toys, books, dolls or trophies.

Storage Bins

Storage can be stylish.

The area under the bed is perfect for storing out-of-season clothes, extra blankets, blocks or smaller toys. Purchase plastic bins with lids, fill them and slide them under the bed. For older kids with smaller personal items, use clean egg cartons for barrettes, rubber bands and coins. Utilize upper closet space by storing keepsakes, old toys, clothes, books and games in larger, clear plastic bins. Label and tuck out of sight.
