Zen Bedroom Themes

Accessories like a Buddha statue and tea light candles complement a Zen design scheme.

For many people, their bedroom is their sanctuary - the one room in the home where they can truly escape the chaos of their daily lives. Designing a bedroom with the study of Zen Buddhism in mind will evoke simplicity, peace and tranquility in this master suite. Striking the right balance between color, wood based materials and Zen inspired accessories can make any bedroom a peaceful haven for the weary.

Colors

Warm colors in earth and sea tones can create a soothing atmosphere in any Zen themed bedroom. Painting the walls in shades of ivory, beige, light blue or light green will help decrease distraction and may even help reflect any natural light that enters the room from its windows. For a more traditional Japanese look, shades of deep red can be placed on the walls and offset by black and white accents throughout the room.

Wood

Because the Zen philosophy is so rooted in nature, basic materials used for foundations in the bedroom, such as the flooring and bed frame, should consist of wooden elements. For example, bamboo or laminate floors can complement a neutral color scheme as can bamboo blinds and wooden futons or bed frames. Choosing woods that are easy to clean and that form clean minimalist lines are essential to the Zen theme.

Accessories

Specific accessories can help highlight the Zen theme of a bedroom, but the important thing to consider is keeping clutter to a bare minimum. For example, a Buddha statue, some incense sticks and wall art that depicts nature in the form of pebbles, Koi fish, driftwood or a picture of a waterfall can help the room's inhabitants clear their minds, according to Dream Home Decorating. In addition, cushions or pillows can be placed in one area of the room that is earmarked for meditation.

Nature's Elements

Bringing touches of the earth into the bedroom can create the peace and natural balance that is a major component of Zen philosophy. Including plants such as bonsai trees or lucky bamboo with tabletop water fountains and tea light candles can infuse the room with the tranquility that is centered in the Buddhist religion.
