Design An Ada Bathroom Stall

ADA compliant toiltet stall.

Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act ensures equal access for all citizens to public accommodations. The ADA Accessibility Guidelines for Buildings and Facilities (ADAAG) are the regulations promulgated by the Department of Justice that accompany Title III of the ADA. The ADAAG guidelines contain the comprehensive requirements for ADA-compliant construction of public accommodations and contain specific guidelines for ADA-compliant bathroom stalls.

Instructions

1. Design at least one ADA compliant toilet stall. The ADA regulations require one accessible toilet stall in public restrooms.

2. Provide accessible route to the stall. An accessible route is a barrier-free, forward-approaching path that is at least 36 inches wide. This allows people who use wheelchairs to access the toilet stall.

3. Design in compliance with size and arrangement guidelines. Stalls must be at least 56 inches deep. If the stall is 59 inches or deeper, the water closet may be mounted on the floor. Otherwise, the water closet must be mounted on the wall. The stall must be at least 60 inches wide. The center-line of the toilet must be 18 inches from the side wall. The toilet stall may be arranged for either a left-hand or right-hand approach.

4. Provide adequate toe clearance. The front partition and at least one side partition must provide a toe clearance of at least 9 inches. If the stall is more than 60 inches deep, toe clearance is not required.

5. Design ADA-compliant stall door. The door must be at least 32 inches wide and open to 90 degrees. If the user must approach the stall from the latch side of the door, there must be a clearance of at least 42 inches between the door and any obstructions in the room.

6. Provide an ADA compliant toilet. The toilet must be 17 to 19 inches from the floor, measured from the top of the toilet seat. The seat of the toilet may not be sprung to return to a lifted position.

7. Provide ADA-compliant grab bars. The grab bars must be installed on the closest adjacent wall to the toilet and directly behind the toilet. The height of the grab bar must be 33 to 36 inches from the floor. The diameter of the grab bar must be 1.25 to 1.5 inches. The space between the grab bar and the wall must be 1.5 inches.
