Decorate And Color Coordinate A Bedroom

Paint sets the mood for a bedroom.

Bedrooms should be a respite from the hassles of modern day schedules. Too often they become an extension of the home office with bills and work piling up on the desks and credenzas. Transform your bedroom into an oasis of calm and peacefulness with the right color selections and decor. Tranquil colors are soothing. Bright colors are energizing. Dark colors make a room seem smaller.

Instructions

1. Leaf through decorating and lifestyle magazines and tear out pictures of bedrooms that appeal to you. Don't worry about whether the ideas would be feasible for your size room and budget. This is a creative brainstorming exercise.

2. Note on the picture why you like it. It could be the color scheme, the type of bed, the bed linens, the lighting, furniture placement or maybe just the feeling it gives you.

3. Divide the pictures into categories. Compare the pictures within the categories in twos. Pick one of the two you like better. Continue through all the pictures comparing them and choosing the one you like best. By the time you've gotten through the categories of color schemes, furniture and the like you should have one picture left in each category. Those pictures are your inspiration for decorating your bedroom.

4. Take the picture of the colors you like best to the paint section of a home improvement stores. Select paint samples that are deeper and brighter than your colors. Compare the paint samples in different lights and times of the day in your bedroom by taping the samples to the walls. Make your final selection of colors. Two should be in the same family and one a brighter contrast. For example: Your bedroom colors could be sea green, aqua and coral.

5. Paint the walls the lightest of the colors, in this case sea green. Bedrooms should be comfortable and restful soothing tones are appropriate. Bright wall colors can energize, which isn't what you want in a bedroom.

6. Lay carpeting that is a neutral color but blends with your chosen colors. The carpeting is a background for the furniture, bed linens and accessories. A sand or light beige rug would go with the ocean colors of sea green and dark aqua.

7. Use the coral in small splashes in the bed linens, pillows, and accessories. The coral contrasts with the sea green and dark aqua but doesn't compete with them in small doses. The bed spread could be a print of seashells in greens and blues with a trim of coral. Add coral pillows in several shades and a few blue pillows and your bedroom is just about complete.
