The Best Bedroom Decorating Styles

The best bedroom decor is one that meets your needs.

There are several different types of ways you can decorate your home space--including your bedroom. Some of the best decorating styles come from designs that you love and want to surround yourself with. The best way to create a look you love is to select some of your favorite looks and base your design from there. Whether you choose to create the design yourself or hire an interior decorator, your bedroom should reflect your favorite design style.

Shabby Chic

If you want a casual look that embraces femininity, the shabby chic decorating style may be your best option. Rachel Ashwell founded Shabby Chic in 1989. The fundamentals of this design are based on comfort, function and beauty. Old antique pieces are brought back to life with pastel paints and glass knobs. Painting your walls a fresh shade of stalk white will set the backdrop for the room. The bed, dressers, armoires and end tables are given new life in shades of yellow, pink and white. Vintage linens can be mismatched on the overstuffed bed. Keep them simple in white or with a small, delicate design. A shabby chic room should be accented with florals and stripes, antique mismatched floral teacups, vintage mirrors, pastel pottery and antique floral rugs.

Traditional

A traditional bedroom design is in order if you appreciate architecture and mismatched antique replicas. Think of a traditional bedroom style as a mix between Pottery Barn and Eddie Bauer designs. Start off by attacking the walls with a deep color such as brown, green, red or yellow. Highlight with white trim so the end result is smooth and rich. Choose dark woods such as cherry or mahogany for your furniture, including the bed. Add sturdy, traditional decor items such as wrought iron wall accents, vanilla candles, framed vintage maps, vintage book collections, oversized clocks, wooden decor items and terrarium-covered plants. For a true traditional look, try to keep color and accents similar in nature.

Victorian

If your house is from the Victorian era, you can bring the look alive in the bedroom. Victorian bedrooms feature ornate pieces with timed antiques and rich textures. Room colors should be dark, such as plum or red with dark wood trim. Wallpaper borders offer a large variety of decorating options to help bring together a room. Deep mahogany or dark oak is the preferred furniture choice. A four-poster canopy bed with matching dressers and end tables can create a Victorian essence. Accent the room with lace accents, doilies, velvet-upholstered chairs and beaded shades.

French Country

The French country look offers a warm and cozy atmosphere. A headboard made from barn wood or an old door creates a warm accent piece for the bedroom. Peeled paint is sought after for this look. The French country look focuses mainly on baby blues, light yellows and bright reds. Antique dressers that are distressed can be accented with home decor items such as toile, silver trays and white vases with sunflowers or roses.
