A hardwood floor enhances the appearance and condition of a room.
Hardwood planks provide a versatile, durable and attractive flooring option that adds rustic charm to your space. Maintained properly, the flooring lasts many years, adding a warm and cozy touch to the hallway, kitchen or any room in your house. When installing the flooring in a hallway and an adjacent bedroom, run the boards along the length of the hallway before working your way into the room. Identify the longest wall in the bedroom and lay the boards along it.
Instructions
1. Roll out sheets of underlayment the length of the hallway. Overlap the edges of adjacent sheets by several inches before stapling them to the subfloor.
2. Snap a starting line along the edge of the hall with the least number of doors and obstructions. Set this chalk line one-half-inch out from the wall.
3. Lay the first row of hardwood planks on the floor along the chalk line, spaced one-half-inch away from the wall. Ensure their grooved sides face the wall. Slide the grooved end of one board into the tongue at the end of another board to join them together, forming a tight seam.
4. Insert flooring nails every 10 to 12 inches along both the edges of the boards. Cut the last board in this row using a miter saw so it fits.
5. Lay the second row of planks next to the previous row, but stagger the joints by 6 inches for an aesthetically pleasing pattern. Nail the boards to the subfloor. Continue to install rows of hardwood planks along the hallway until you reach the second-to-last row.
6. Measure the space between the wall and the second-to-last row and strip planks one-half-inch smaller in width. Lay the strips for the last row to complete the installation of the flooring in the hallway.
7. Install the baseboard or trim along the edges of the flooring to cover the expansion gaps. Set the lower ends of the boards above the floor and nail these to the wall. Work your way around the hallway.
8. Unscrew the hinges that secure your bedroom door to the frame using a screwdriver. Cut a scrap piece of underlayment the width of a hardwood plank. Lay the plank above the underlayment and measure the height. Transfer this height to both the doorjambs along the doorway.
9. Cut along both the lines in the doorjambs using a handsaw. Pry the loose piece of wood along the lower end of each jamb with a crowbar.
10. Cut a hardwood plank 1/4-inch shorter than the width of the doorway. Cut as many planks as you need to cover the width of the doorway.
11. Roll out sheets of underlayment from the door to the bedroom and nail these to the subfloor. Slide the cut planks under the doorjambs between the doorway.
12. Snap a chalk line against the longest wall in the bedroom, 1/2-inch outward from the wall, to use as the guideline for installing the hardwood flooring planks. Repeat the process of installing the planks in this room and nailing them to the flooring. Cut the last board in each row to size so it fits the available space. Stagger the planks in adjacent rows by 6 inches.
