Decorate A Bedroom With Beach Decor

The bedroom is the ideal place to create a beach-inspired retreat, with its relaxing, uncluttered feel. The inspiration of the sand and the ocean, the sea greens and marine blues underneath a bright sky can make for a blissful boudoir. Investing in some colorful accents and a couple key pieces are all you need to transform the bedroom into a beach hideaway.

Instructions

Surf's Up

1. Get inspired. There are a bevvy of possibilities for beach decor. There is the shabby-chic cottage style with furniture painted in pale colors. There is the fantasy jungle/tropical style that is surreal and beautiful in paintings by Henri Rousseau. The jaunty nautical style, with crisp lines and bright whites against navy blue, has a New England feeling. The tiki and Hawaiian styles can be arty or kitschy, with totems, textures, bright flowers and lanterns.

2. Prime the canvas. Start with the walls, which will set the stage for the room. The obvious choice sare hues of the sand, sea and sky, but don't shy away from adding some dashes of bright color reminiscent of a sunset or a coral reef. The cottage style looks beautiful with sun-bleached colors and distressed finishes. You can also add a thematic trim by painting stencils of seashells or starfish.

3. Case the bedroom to determine what pieces will have the greatest impact. Big paper lanterns lend the feeling of a late-night beach party. A vintage iron bed frame painted antique white matches the beach house theme. Furniture made of wicker, rattan, bamboo, light wood and pastel-painted metal is ideal. Emphasize natural light by using sheer curtains or a translucent screen. You can also consider adding some fun pieces, like a hammock on a stand or a portable fireplace.

4. Accessorize the look by bringing in natural elements. Try placing a leafy palm plant in the corner, or filling blue glass bottles with bright blossoms. Adorn a tabletop or shelf with a display of sea shells and glass beads in marine hues. Add a sand-hued throw rug or straw mat. If the overall look is too pale, bring in some dramatic accents, like a sunset-toned painting or throw pillows embroidered with brilliant flowers.

5. Personalize the space. In beach decor, the overall look should be eclectic and somewhat worn as opposed to glossy and coordinated, so relics from the attic and forgotten little treasures are at home here. Frame family photographs or favorite artwork in vintage frames of painted wood. Use a painted metal rack to display a collection of chipped flower teacups or a row of beautiful stones. Pour yourself an umbrella drink and enjoy your beach vacation.
