Home Remedy For A Clogged Bathroom Sink

You are running late. You have a meeting, kids to get to school, and your better half is fussing about the bathroom sink not draining. A clogged bathroom sink is something you don't want to deal with first thing in the morning. Soap, hair, toothpaste, shaving cream and other bathroom toiletries are the cause of most sink clogging issues. There is a solution to your bathroom sink problem and it is right in your kitchen cupboard---baking soda and vinegar.

Clogged Bathroom Sink Remedy

Pour ½ cup of baking soda into your clogged bathroom sink. You don't need to wet the substance, just pour it down the drain. Then pour one cup of white vinegar down the drain. Let the mixture set for 30 minutes. Now all you have to do is boil 1 gallon of water in a sauce pan or kettle and pour it down the clogged drain. If the clog is not freed, try the mixture again and this time let it set for 45 minutes to an hour.

Note, only add the boiling hot water if the pipes in your bathroom are metal. If the pipes are plastic (PVC), use hot tap water from the faucet. Boiling hot water may melt your plastic pipes.

Tips on Unclogging Sinks

Use the baking soda/vinegar mixture monthly to keep your bathroom sink open and free of debris and buildup. For minor draining issues, a plunger will work if you are in a hurry and don't have time to wait for the baking soda/vinegar mixture to work. The plunger will bring up any debris and you can discard it in a plastic bag or trash can. Do not dispose of the debris from your clogged sink down a toilet or another drain.

Repair of Advance Drain Issues

If the baking soda/vinegar mixture or plunger does not break up the clog, the problem is deep within your house's plumbing system. Consult with a plumber or repair the problem yourself by removing the sink's drain pipe to investigate where the clog may be. Use a sewer snake, also known as a auger, to open the clog beyond the pipes in your bathroom. Make sure you wear rubber gloves and put a drop cloth or tarp down on the floor to keep debris from staining your bathroom's tile.
