Measure For Bedroom Curtains

Getting the right measurements for your curtains can help ensure that they look perfect when hung.

In order to have your bedroom curtains look right when they are hung, it is vital to get the correct measurements for them. If you don't have an existing curtain rod, these measurements also help you find the right spot to install the brackets for the rod. It is helpful to have a friend help hold your tape measure, particularly if the windows are wide. This way, the tape measure is held steady, so you can get the exact measurements you need.

Instructions

1. Decide what type of curtains you want for your window. If you have windowsills, it is best to have the curtains stop right above the sill. If you have radiators that sit underneath the window, the curtains need to stop directly above the radiator, as it is not safe to have long curtains over them. For picture or bay windows or windows without sills, floor-length curtains typically work best.

2. Measure the width of the window. Remember to add enough room for the brackets for the curtain rod. It is a good idea to have curtains extend at least 1 inch on either side of the window to keep unwanted light out. Hold the tape measure steady and extend it to the correct point on the other side. Write down this measurement and mark it as "width." If you are measuring more than one window and they are of different sizes, make sure to mark down on your sheet which window you are measuring.

3. Measure the length of the window. Start the tape measure about 1 inch before the window starts to allow enough room for the curtain rod. Take the tape measure down to the point where you want your curtains to stop. Most commercial ready-made curtains are sold in lengths of either 60 inches or 84 inches, but they can be hemmed to fit any size, or you can order custom-made curtains. Write this measurement down on your sheet.

4. Multiply the width measurement by two. In order for curtains to hang properly, you must have enough fabric to work with. It is recommended to double the width of your window. For example, if your window measures at 24 inches across, you actually need 48 inches of width for your curtains.

5. Calculate how many panels you need for your curtains. Once you have your measurements, decide how many panels you need. For most standard-sized windows, that are 24 to 30 inches across, two panels will be sufficient. For larger bay windows, typically four panels are needed, or you may need to special order curtains that are cut to fit.
