Bedroom Drapery Ideas

Drapery in the bedroom is often used to block out unwanted light.

Drapery, or curtains, in the bedroom are used to block out light in varying degrees, set a mood or add a stylized feel to the space. Depending on the drapery chosen and the design, bedroom drapery can do all of the above or serve a specific purpose. Drapery should match or complement the existing color of the bedroom walls, carpet and décor. According to Candice Olson, HGTV expert, the proper window treatment paired with a well designed room can create a luxurious and regal space.

Light Drapery

Light and wispy fabrics add a bright feel to the room.

Light or wispy fabrics used for drapery allow a considerable amount of light to penetrate the room, creating a bright and airy environment. When using lightweight fabrics, the use of light colors is most common as they add to the glowing ambiance of the room. Wispy fabrics can be layered over the window for increased light blockage or hung as a single layer to simply add some privacy to the bedroom area. The light fabrics can also be draped over the bed posts, or around the entire room to unify the airy design.

Heavy Fabrics

Rich, warm colors and heavy drapery add a regal feel to any room.

Heavy drapery uses thick, rich toned fabrics to entirely block out the light in a room and add a regal ambiance. Heavy fabric is classically used for bedroom drapery as the complete light blockage functions to keep the sleeping area dark during rest. Heavy fabrics, though completely opaque with one layer, are commonly designed to have multiple layers in order to add depth to the design. The fabrics are usually dark and rich in color, often made of a soft velvety fabric. The rich tones help add depth and style to the otherwise oppressive thick fabric.

Bed Drapery

Bed drapery darken the area to promote sound sleep.

Used on four poster beds with high frames, bed drapery can add a romantic feel to the bed area or specifically increase light blockage around the bed itself. Bed drapery is typically hung in the style of classic curtains from the frame above the bed. All four sides are surrounded by drapery, which can be pulled to the side when not in use. Bed drapery is commonly used for insomniacs or those who have a hard time falling asleep as they completely block light penetration when closed.
