Talk to your daughter about what things she likes before planning to decorate her room. Your daughter may be the best source of ideas for her room redecoration. Figure out what things interest her, and listen to any ideas she has. Involve her in this process of decorating her room, and you'll find she will appreciate her bedroom even more.
Colors
Ask your daughter what colors she would like for her room. The most obvious girl color is pink, but not all girls like pink. Be sure to check with instead of assuming she will want pink walls, bedding and accessories.
If your daughter changes her mind about colors frequently, it may be a good idea to paint the walls white and accent them with whatever colors she chooses. Accents can be created by painting murals, using stencils or with stick-on wall art, posters or pictures. These things can be changed easily to match with your daughter's new favorite color and won't require you to repaint her entire room.
Furniture
Use furniture that to express herself. Give her shelves to decorate with trinkets of her choice and also a place to store them. Make drawers more exciting by changing the drawer pulls to a fun favorite shape such as flowers or butterflies. These can be found at hardware stores or discount stores.
Get her a funky chair to sit in when she's just lounging in her room. Choose from many different styles such as moon chairs, bean bag chairs and sphere chairs.
Make sure she has adequate storage space. Put shelves or a closet system in her closet, and include bins for her to organize her accessories.
Accessories
Decorate your girl's room with colorful pillows. These can be beaded, in the shape of her favorite character, animal or flower, or hand decorated by your daughter with some glue and glitter, sequins or ribbon.
Purchase an alarm clock that coordinates with the colors and theme of your daughter's bedroom. Coordinate lamps, too. She'll need a bedside lamp and a lamp on her desk. Paint wooden or plastic lamps, and replace or decorate the lamp shades to match the new room. Let come up with some fun ideas for decorating these.
Purchase wooden or ceramic letters for your daughter's name. Let her choose where to put them. They could go on a wall or on the outside of her door.
Install a full-length mirror so your daughter can check out her outfits. If there isn't a place for this on the wall, put one on the back of the door. These can be purchased for as little as $6, but you can get nicer, more durable ones for a bit more money.
Consider using chalkboard paint to create a chalkboard on the wall. This allows your daughter to actually draw on her wall. She can use the spot for creativity, to leave messages or both. Create a frame around the chalkboard to make it more defined and decorative.
Involve your daughter in decorating her room. Even a preschooler can help pick out some of the details. Of course, if your girl is very young, you'll need to present her with some choices. Take an older daughter to the hardware store with you to pick out paint colors and to check out accessories.
