A rustic bedroom with painted yellow wood walls.
A rustic bedroom has colors that are close to nature. Rustic bedrooms may have paint over distressed wooden walls, or wood paneling left in its natural state. The Adirondack look is a popular American rustic theme, which can be found in lodges in upstate New York, and used by designers to create rustic themes in people's homes. You don't have to be a designer to get the rustic look in a bedroom.
Choose Colors
Colors that make a bedroom rustic are warm tones, such as earth tones. These are colors that are found in nature that can be combined with other colors within a room, or rustic design elements. Sea greens, mellow yellows and various shades of brown are just some rustic choices to choose from when painting over wood wall paneling. The paint can also be applied to bare walls for a rustic look.
Choose Accessories to Accentuate
Different types of accessories do wonders to bring out rustic color themes within a bedroom.
Ceiling Fixtures
An oil-rubbed ceiling fixture made from bronze gives a rustic look, for the bronze shows through the oil, and the color of the lamp matches earth tones of wall color. Lamps that have large shades add rustic appeal to various sections of a bedroom. Low-wattage lamps add a warm glow to rustic room colors, and the atmosphere in general.
Choose Furniture that Complements the Wall Color
Pine or oak furniture goes well in a rustic bedroom. The furniture should be made of wood left in its natural color. Furniture coated in clear varnish or furniture that is left in its natural color work best to achieve the rustic look. Wood that is painted with varnish protects the furniture, and gives a bedroom a country look as well. This type of furniture--varnished but left unpainted--also makes the colors on a wall "pop," because unpainted furniture doesn't take away from the wall color, yet it adds to the design element.
Finishing Touches
Finishing touches to a rustic bedroom to tie the theme together include the use of accessories. Items that come from nature, such as wall hangings that depict birds, flowers, animals or nature scenes look rustic. Decorating with dry leaves or old books adds a rustic touch. Antique wooden display cabinets or bookshelves against walls in sections enable people to neatly display their accessories. Clean pine cones in a wicker basket make easy rustic centerpieces for tables, and match warm brown or tan wall paint.
