Color coordination is particularly important in a small bedroom.
When your tiny bedroom starts to feel drab, and you're tired of the same old colors and styles, redecorate that small space to bring it back to life. It doesn't have to cost a fortune to redecorate your bedroom. With just a few savvy techniques, a small bedroom can be transformed with a modest outlay of money. Determine the style you want to create and begin renovating.
Bed Makeover
The right bedding can brighten a small room.
Replace old linens with new ones. Set a budget and wait for sales. Instead of buying a bed in a bag, choose your linens a la carte. Let a new comforter or bedspread be the focal point and use plain, less expensive linens underneath. Or focus on high-thread-count linens or luxurious satin sheets, and keep the existing bed covers. Hang a mosquito bar over the bed for a romantic look, and if you are at all crafty, make a new headboard from plywood, foam and fabric.
Wall Makeover
New shelving can help organize the small bedroom.
When your walls begin to close in on you, it's time to push back with a little paint. Lighter colors are best for small bedrooms, but if you crave a bold look, apply a bright color to one wall as an accent and keep the other walls muted. Put up shelves where there were no shelves before, or take down shelves and replace with sconces. Posters, pictures and art work can change the personality of a room entirely.
Furniture Makeover
Make a cloth cover for a storage chest and use as a night stand.
If old furniture is the worse for wear, scout second-hand stores for replacements, and choose space-saving tables or chests. Tall and narrow is better than short and wide in a small room. Think outside the box: An old trunk or storage container can be covered with cloth and used as a night stand. You have the added benefit of hidden storage when you do this. If your chest of drawers or dresser are still useful, paint them if the finish will allow, then stencil a pleasing design and change the hardware. Sponge painting and similar techniques add visual texture.
Window Makeover
Add a little playfulness to a small room with window blinds.
New window treatments can transform the look of a room, and they come in lots of styles. Consider romantic Battenberg café curtains, or floor-length curtains with sheers underneath. Cornices make great craft projects and add elegance to a bedroom. Small rooms will be overwhelmed with heavy, dramatic window treatments, so be sure to keep fabrics on the light side, both in weight and color. Put up shutters or blinds for a charming and clean look.
Floor Makeover
Oriental rugs bring personality to a small room.
New carpet is likely to be expensive, but sometimes a good steam cleaning can revitalize the old one. Room-sized rugs add splashes of color and style, and in the case of Oriental rugs, add a particular personality to the room. Keep the designs small and sleek to offset the smallness of the room. If your floors are wood or terrazzo, give them a deep cleaning and a proper buffing to see if their natural beauty can be restored. If they are hopeless, painting them will help cover their faults. Consider stenciling in a design with several muted tones.
