Remodel a Kitchen & Bathroom for Cheap
If you are looking to sell your home, realtors and remodeling magazines suggest that updated bathrooms and kitchens bring a huge return for the cost of renovation. You don't have to spend a lot of money when renovating kitchens and baths. You can do in on the cheap by searching home store clearance sales, surplus stores and salvage yards for appliances, cabinets, sinks, flooring and more.

Decide on a Look
1. The first step to remodeling any room is to decide what look you are going for. For resale value, you should avoid personalizing the room too much. Avoid bright colors like reds, purples, oranges and such because they may overwhelm potential buyers. Gravitate more towards neutral shades of beige, white and soft grays.
2. Paint is cheap and goes a long way to change the look of a room. Paint all of the walls and the ceiling to give the room a clean updated look. If you are not able to purchase new kitchen and bathroom cabinets, paint the old ones with a clean coat of white paint and simply add new hardware. You'll be amazed at how different they can look with these simple and affordable changes.
3. Search your local home store for discontinued or clearance-priced appliances and flooring. You can also check salvage yards, appliance stores and surplus stores that carry overstock and remnants from home builders, remodels, granite remnants and more. In many instances you can save up to 75 percent off retail price by shopping around.
4. One way to update your kitchen is to put in stainless steel appliances. Search home stores and websites for discontinued or slightly scratched or dented models. Stores are always looking to get rid of old stock so that they can add new inventory to their showrooms. Often you can find a really good deal on a showroom model that may have a small dent or hardly noticeable scratch on it.
5. Take out your old porcelain sink and put in a stainless steel one. Sinks are relatively cheap and give your kitchen an instant face lift. Replace the faucets in the kitchen and bathrooms, and your sink will take on a whole new look. You can also reglaze your bathtub to cover over resistant stains and nicks in the porcelain.
6. Lighting and window blinds are another way to update a room. Take out the old light fixtures and put in new pendants or overhead lights. Take down the old vertical or mini blinds and update them with 2-inch faux wood blinds or roll-up shades. You can find many inexpensive choices at your local home or lighting store.
