Good table manners are extremely important, for you are judged and leave a lasting impression by how you conduct yourself at the table. This guide of dos and don'ts will teach you the basic rules of dining etiquette. You will learn the skills that will put you at ease in any social situation and will elevate you from just eating to fine dining.

1. Do


Have good posture and keep your elbows off of the table.


Avoid talking with your mouth full of food. Take small bites; it will be easier to talk.


Swallow your food before taking a sip of water.


Try of little of everything on your plate.


Say please and thank you.


2. Don't


Overload your plate.


Put your knife in your mouth or wave your utensils in the air when talking.


Spread your elbows when cutting meat.


Chew with your mouth open.


Crumble crackers in your soup; place a few at a time instead.


3. More Don'ts


Tell others you have to go to the restroom; politely excuse yourself and go.


Reach across the table or others; ask the closest person to pass.


Pick your teeth, blow your nose, or groom yourself at the table. Instead, excuse yourself and tend to that in the restroom.








Place purses or personal items on the table. Small purses on your lap, larger ones on the floor.


4. Etiquette is not taught much anymore. But the basics of fine dining always begins with good table manners, it makes for a better dining experience and an enjoyable meal for everyone.
