Arrange A Dining Room

Arrange your dining room funriture so it is attractive and functional.

While many modern homes are now designed with an open floor plan, doing away with the traditional dining room, a room designated for eating and entertaining is still common in many homes. Depending on the size and layout of the room, and your dining room furniture, you may have limited options for arranging furniture and accessories. However, with some creativity and advance planning, you can arrange and decorate a dining room that is both functional and attractive.

Instructions

1. Measure the dining room and your furniture pieces to determine how much space you have to work with. In general, you should have at least 18 inches of space to maneuver around the furniture. Taking measurements will help you plan the room arrangement before you move heavy furniture.

2. Create a scale drawing of your dining room on graph paper, taking care to mark the location of windows, doors and other architectural features. Mark the location of electrical outlets and switches; you do not want to place a tall china hutch in front of a switch and block access to it. Add scale drawings of furniture, experimenting with different arrangements until you find one that you are happy with.

3. Start arranging the room with the floor. If you're adding an area rug, place it on the floor according to your measurements and scale drawing.

4. Add furniture to the room, starting with the largest pieces. Placing the largest pieces first allows you to adjust the smaller furniture pieces according to the space available.

5. Edit and arrange furniture according to your space and preference. If you have a small space, for example, you do not have to include every piece of the dining room set in the room. Store extra chairs in another room or line them against the wall, putting them at the table only when necessary.

6. Add accessories and artwork to complete your room. A mirror placed on a wall opposite a window will reflect light and make the room feel larger, while heavy draperies create a formal and intimate feeling. Don't be afraid to move items around and try different combinations until you are pleased with how your room looks.
