Give your princess the bedroom of her dreams.
Chances are the real princesses of old didn't have the luxury of color-coordinated d cor that decorators have access to today. Your very own princess will love a princess-themed bedroom with pale pinks, sparkling gold and rich fabrics. Each carefully selected accessory will only add to the mystique. Start with a new coat of paint---an inexpensive way to completely change the look of a room. Add the other decorative elements as you go and, before you know it, you'll have transformed an ordinary room into one worthy of a palace.
Instructions
1. Paint the walls a pale shade of pink. Use masking tape to block off areas where you can paint dark pink and gold stripes on the walls after the pale pink has dried. Paint the trim a dark shade of pink, such as a dusky rose. Avoid pinks that are too bright, as they will be overwhelming, cautions the Sheffield School of Interior Design.
2. Select decorative golden curtain rods with finials that look like giant sparkling diamonds a fairy-tale princess would have in her jewelry box. Hang light, gauzy curtains that are pink, lavender or cream-colored. Overlay these curtains with a matching rich velvet or dupioni silk curtain for more privacy. Add fancy tassel tiebacks in a coordinating color.
3. Buy a thick plush comforter for the bed, along with a matching skirt. In keeping with the princess theme, these should be cream-colored or a shade of pink. Decorate the bed with several throw pillows and shams in a variety of fabrics and shades of pink, gold and cream. Touches of chocolate brown and sage green will add a bit of contrast without detracting from the overall princess theme. Add a canopy of cream-colored gauze over the bed if the room is spacious enough to not be overwhelmed by this addition.
4. Place a large area rug underneath the bed. Small fluffy throw rugs can serve as accents. Coordinate the rugs with the bedding and walls.
5. Place an armoire in a corner of the room to provide storage for media, toys or clothes. Consider purchasing one of the armoires that are painted with delicate scenes of flowers or angels. A custom-painted armoire with a picture of a crown is ideal.
6. Frame artwork in gilded wooden frames, making sure that the artwork works with the princess theme. Pictures of castles, unicorns and other princesses work well.
7. Hang a small chandelier above a writing table or other appropriate area. Choose a white one that has plenty of sparkling prisms to provide the glamor a princess craves.
8. Create storage space in a closet or on one side of the bedroom. A princess's bedroom is never cluttered. Consider building storage shelves and cubbies along one wall and covering them with fabric--perhaps even the same fabric used for the window treatments.
