The beauty of wood can be enhanced with wood stain, a coloring or tint made especially for wood that will tint the wood grain without covering it like paint would. Wood stain is available in various colors, so research which you prefer. One option for bedroom furniture is to use a low VOC, or volatile organic compound, stain that will emit little or no odors. The bedroom is a place for rest and relaxation, so it should smell good and look beautiful.
Instructions
1. Clean the furniture to be stained. The wood will need to be completely free of dirt and debris.
2. Lightly sand the furniture. This will prepare the surface to accept the stain and remove any previous finish that could prevent even coats. Wipe clean.
3. Apply stain in the direction of the wood grain with a sponge, brush or rag, according to the manufacturer's directions. Apply two to three coats to achieve the desired color. Use gloves to protect your hands and newspaper or drop cloths to protect the floor.
4. Protect the new finish with a polyurethane coating, again applying in the direction of the grain. Apply two to three coats, lightly sanding the surface in between each coat.
5. Use coasters and fabric protectors to keep the furniture finish perfect. While the polyurethane will protect the finish, you will need to keep water from standing on the surface and protect it from scratches from lamps or other furniture.
