Decorate A Tween'S Bedroom With Black & White

Tweens start to mature and develop a desire to express themselves.

"Tweens," children around the ages of nine to 13, start to assert their individuality and creativity. What better place to express it than with their own bedroom. When the time comes to make over a tween's bedroom, consider a black and white color scheme. It ups the cool factor from kiddie decor and offers a striking backdrop to highlight your tween's interests. Plus black and white furnishings tend to be less expensive than their wood-finish counterparts.

Instructions

1. Paint the walls white or a combination of black and white. Avoid painting all of the walls black. This can be too brooding for the tween set. Instead, paint one accent wall black and the rest white. For the creative tween, use black chalkboard paint on one wall and provide colorful chalk so your tween can note school assignments or draw pictures.

2. Arrange black furniture. Kids this age tend to change their minds often, so don't spend a ton of money on an expensive bedroom suite. Pick up inexpensive pieces of furniture, such as a bed, dresser, desk and chair, at yard sales and thrift stores, and paint them black. Grab a black or white slipcover for any upholstered furniture in the room.

3. Hang window treatments. White sheers with black panels make a clean, simple statement, or have fun with patterns. Stripes, polka dots or even zebra prints in black and white are a funky alternative.

4. Accessorize with personal details. Get favorite snapshots of cherished friends enlarged into black and white posters. Place them in simple black frames and decorate the walls as desired. Add a magnetic white board for displaying birthday cards, swimming ribbons or other mementos.

5. Add a punch of color. A few turquoise throw pillows or a red rug can bring a black and white room to life. Buy a lampshade in your tween's favorite color, or add multicolored floor cushions for playing video games. Any color will look good, and you can change accessories easily as your tween's taste changes.
