Clean Old Knobs On Bedroom Furniture

Whether they're made of brass, ceramic or wood, knobs on bedroom furniture can provide an eye-catching touch of class. Because they attract attention, keep them clean and in good condition, especially if they're antique or collectible. Here are some tips on making them sparkle.

Instructions

Clean Old Knobs on Bedroom Furniture

1. Take off the old knobs using a screwdriver. You can't give them a really good cleaning while they're still on the dresser or night table, and you don't want to damage the furniture finish.

2. Soak ceramic and glass knobs in warm, soapy water to loosen the dirt. (Dishwashing detergent is fine.) Let them soak for about an hour. Scrub with a soft toothbrush as necessary. Dry with a soft towel.

3. If brass knobs are just dirty, follow the instructions in Step 2. An easier alternative is to rub the knobs with a soft cloth. This buffing will take some work, but the knobs will shine.

4. If the brass knobs are unlacquered and tarnished, use a soft cloth to rub on a nontoxic metal cleaner---or ketchup or Worcestershire sauce. Wipe clean, and the tarnish will be gone.

5. If you have lacquered brass knobs, wash them with soapy water and dry well. Use a soft cloth to apply a coat or two of paste wax, then wipe with a clean cloth.

6. Don't submerge wood knobs in water. Wipe them with a soft cloth and soapy water and dry them well.
