Hang colorful bags on your wall for storage and decoration.
Long after the '60s, the ideas of the hippie movement are still inspiring. Not only that, but the hippie look is in fashion, which means that many pieces can be purchased off the shelf. You can also just do your own thing--which is even more true to the hippie spirit.
Creating Your Own Hippie Pad
Make a list of what you love about the '60s. Is it the music? The politics? The psychedelic art? Decide which aspects mean the most to you and collect some posters that reflect your interests. These can be reproductions of band posters for the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and the Grateful Dead, or inspirational posters with quotes from Martin Luther King Jr. If you are going for a psychedelic look, find posters of artwork with bright colors and surrealistic images. You can also use reproductions of newspaper and magazine covers.
Do It Yourself
Many of the elements of the hippie look are easy to make yourself. Paint the walls in a bright orange or groovy purple. Depending on the look you are going for, you can paint geometric shapes or a large peace sign. Remember that small imperfections are just a way of showing that the painting was done by hand. Hang colorful scarves on the doors and tapestries on the walls. Add a few macramé planters and a few strands of beads to complete the look. Try searching thrift stores for vintage gear to complete the effect. A dress that is the wrong size can be hung on the wall as decoration. This is one style that becomes more authentic if you go a little overboard.
Appeal to the Senses
The lava lamp was a staple of every hippie pad, but you do not need to stop there. Add small decorator lamps covered with beads and exotic patterns for a funky effect. Use red and blue bulbs to heighten the mood. The hippie aesthetic is not only visual. Create a full sensory experience by appealing to the senses of touch, sound and smell as well. Hang a beaded curtain inside your bedroom door so that you can feel as well hear the transition into your private space. Use furry covers for your pillows or choose an extra fuzzy throw rug. Add small bells to appeal to sound as well. The sense of smell is one of the most powerful memory triggers. This can be invoked with incense or candles. If open flame is not permitted in your room, you can also use open bowls of potpourri and spices.
