You can grow many kinds of vegetables in a hydroponic grow room.
Almost any room can be made into a hydroponic grow room, bringing a bounty of plants into the house. The room doesn't need a lot of special features, just plenty of light, temperature control and good ventilation. You will also want to monitor the humidity in the room to ensure that your plants have optimal growing conditions.
Instructions
1. Remove any carpeting from the room, since carpeting holds moisture that will quickly lead to mold and mildew in the grow room. Also, remove any furniture and draperies.
2. Paint the room flat white, which adds reflective light. Be sure to paint the floor and ceiling as well as all the walls.
3. Arrange benches, tables or growing platforms so you have easy access to all of the plants in your grow room. Wide tables should have a walkway all the way around, and narrow benches or counters should have room for you to walk along one side.
4. Set an exhaust fan in one window, and point it so it blows the hot air from the grow room to the outside. Place two circulation fans in the room, one on the floor and one hanging from the ceiling. Do not set them so they will blow directly on the plants.
5. Hang grow lights over the growing tables, benches and counters. Lights should be hung on adjustable chains suspended from the ceiling. You can start with fluorescent lights if you will only be growing greens, but for flowering plants and vegetables you will need metal halide or high-pressure sodium lighting.
6. Connect each fan and light to a timer, and set them all to run for 16 hours per day. This will provide for optimal growth for your plants.
7. Install the weather station so you can monitor the room's temperature and humidity. Keep the temperature between 65 and 80 degrees F, with lower temperatures at night and warmer temperatures in the day. Keep the humidity between 40 and 60 percent. Your grow room is now ready for plants.
