Replace Washers In A Bathroom Faucet

A dripping faucet is an annoyance that is quickly fixed.

If you've noticed that your bathroom faucet is dripping, it may be time to replace the compression washers under the valve stems. When you close the faucet, the compression washers press down on the valve seat, closing off the flow of water. The compression washers wear out over time and need to be replaced to prevent water from seeping past them. You can replace the compression washers with a few basic tools.

Instructions

1. Turn off the water supply to the faucet. These valves are under the sink. Open the faucet to drain any remaining water.

2. Pry the decorative cap off the top of the faucet knob using a flat screwdriver. Remove the retaining screw from the knob with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the knob off the valve stem.

3. Turn the valve assembly nut counterclockwise with an adjustable wrench until it can be removed. Pull the valve assembly out of the valve seat.

4. Remove the screw from the bottom of the valve stem using a Phillips screwdriver. Remove and discard the old compression washer from the end of the valve stem.

5. Place the new compression washer on the end of the valve stem. Insert the Phillips-head screw and tighten it until it's snug.

6. Place the valve assembly in the valve seat and turn it clockwise until it's finger tight. Turn the valve assembly nut an additional 1/2 turn clockwise with an adjustable wrench. Turn on the water supply to the faucet and check for leaks. Turn the valve assembly nut clockwise, 1/4 turn at a time, until any leaks stop.

7. Place the knob on the valve stem, insert the retaining screw and tighten it until it's snug. Place the decorative cap on the knob and tap it, gently, until it snaps into place.
