Fold The Corners When Reupholstering Dining Room Chairs

Upholstered dining chairs add color and texture to the setting.

Dining room chair seats are often covered by homeowners who want to change up the appearance of their furniture. If the seat has a thick foam support, it is common to see gathered or unattractive corners when the cover is stapled. To create crisp and professional-looking corners without sewing, you need to fold the corner twice so that the fabric is gathered and the end is finished. To accomplish this task, you start by examining the details of the chair.

Instructions

Fold a Round Corner

1. Place the chair seat foam side down over the fabric. Pull the top fabric to the underside, and staple the center 2 inches from the edge. Stretch the bottom fabric snug to the underside. Staple in the center 2 inches from the edge. Pull the left and then the right side, stapling from the center toward the corners.

2. Check your seat to see which is the front edge and which are the sides. Create a pleat 1/2 inch from the foam corner along the side of the seat. Tuck the side fabric forward, around the corner and inside the front fabric. Smooth out all layers of fabric. Your pleat edge should be vertical up the side and parallel with the front edge. Staple the pleat to the back underside wood.

3. Make a second pleat that folds in the same direction at the corner edge of the front of the seat. Tuck the remaining loose fabric along the inside of the front fabric. The pleat should be vertically straight and parallel with the side of the seat. Staple the pleat to the back side of the seat. Repeat for each corner. Keep your pleats to the sides of the seat for an even appearance.

Fold a Straight Corner

4. Staple the fabric to your chair seat until it is 3 inches from each corner.

5. Wrap your side fabric flat around the side of the cushion at the corner toward the front of the seat. Pleat from the top corner down to form a straight vertical pleat at the corner from the front-facing fabric.

6. Pull the pleat snug to the underside, and staple the pleat and remaining fabric at the corner. Repeat for each corner, keeping your pleats to the outside or facing the sides.
