Coastal Bathroom Decorating Ideas

Seashells are a must-have in any coastal bathroom.

Coastal-themed bathrooms provide the perfect place to retreat for a breath of fresh air during a stressful day. One of the best ways to begin your redecorating is to select a painting of the ocean that resembles the feel you want for your bathroom. Once you're armed with some inspiration, you're ready to start choosing colors, furnishings and accessories.

Colors

Soft maritime colors are one of the distinguishing features of a coastal bathroom. As you choose colors for your redecorating project, reflect on colors you are likely to see in the water, sand, sunshine, and palm trees of a beach landscape. Stick to soft whites, beiges, blues and yellows for any major painting. Accent these colors with tans, grays, browns, greens and pale pinks.

Walls and Windows

While plain, painted walls look attractive in many beach-style bathrooms, you may wish to consider changing up the walls with some added texture. Try adding white tongue and groove paneling to a chair rail height, or put up stone tiling in a neutral color.

Allow plenty of natural sunlight in by using white or sheer curtains on the windows. Hang the curtains on a driftwood curtain rod for an especially coastal touch.

Floors and Mats

If you plan to redo your bathroom's flooring to match its coastal theme, consider installing distressed wood flooring or stone tiles, as both of these create an unexpected fresh atmosphere. When it comes to rugs, you have a couple different options. Woven grass mats follow the beach theme. However, extra-soft, fluffy white bath rugs are a welcome addition to any coastal bathroom as well.

Bathtub and Shower

If you have a large bathroom and plenty of room in your budget, a white, free-standing bathtub will fit flawlessly into your beach-themed retreat. If you prefer not to spend the extra money, try widening the bath space you already have with an inexpensive curved shower rod. Regardless of the type of tub you have, a rain-type showerhead is the perfect splurge to help complete your coastal bathroom.

Sink, Counter and Mirror

Coastal bathrooms don't require an elaborate sink or counter. In fact, simple fixtures with clean lines are usually preferable. If you don't need a lot of counter space, a pedestal sink that resembles the shape of a seashell adds a nice touch. If you have space for a framed mirror (instead of a mirror that is glued directly to the wall), look for a frame made of driftwood or seashells.

Furniture

Stick to white or cream for any furniture or cabinets you wish to use in the bathroom. If you want to add some texture, wicker pieces provide a nice alternative.

Accessories

When choosing accessories for your coastal bathroom, consider the colors and textures you would find at the beach. Add pieces that include weathered wood, twine, glass, rocks, seashells, sand dollars and starfish. Hang some soft, white towels and a linen shower curtain as finishing touches to your bathroom. Finally, don't forget to hang up the art piece that inspired it all.
