Protect Wood Dining Tables

Protection for Wood Dining Tables

Use this simple and inexpensive technique to protect your wood dining tables from damage.

Instructions

1. Protecting your expensive wood dining table from damage can be a difficult problem to solve. One answer is to purchase a custom made and sized table pad from one of the many mail order companies that sell them. However, protection for your wood table can be found for much less, if you are willing to put in a little effort on the project.

2. To begin, use a tape measure or cloth measuring tape to measure the overall dimensions of your dining table. You need the length and width measurements mainly. Write these measurements down because you will need them for the next step.

3. Next, you need to find a large cardboard box, such as the boxes they use for appliances like refrigerators or washing machines. Make sure it is clean and dry before you begin. Use a measuring tape, pencil and a straightedge to mark the same dimensions on the box as those of your tabletop. Be sure to draw clear lines where you will need to cut. Move the box to a flat surface that will not be injured if the knife blade comes through on the other side of the box. An outdoor porch or patio would be a good place to work. Next, use a sharp box cutter style knife to cut the box to the size dimensions that you need to cover your table.

4. This piece of cardboard will protect the delicate surface of your wooded table from dents and dings from heavy objects and insulate it to some extent from hot pots and pans. Place your new cardboard table pad on top of your table and get ready for the next step.

5. Next, cover the cardboard table pad with the vinyl table cloth and use the packaging tape to tape the vinyl tablecloth to the underside of the table to secure it in place. This vinyl tablecloth will do a good job of protecting your delicate wooden table top from liquids and spills that are bound to happen. Just be sure to clean wet spills up promptly, so they can't soak through the vinyl tablecloth.

6. Finally, cover your table top with a nice cloth tablecloth that you like. This should cover and conceal the vinyl cloth and homemade table pad. This system is an inexpensive and easy way to cover the surface of your wooden dining room table and protect it from the many dangers that it faces everyday.
