Preteen Bedroom Ideas For Cheap

Adding bright colors and textures is an inexpensive way to transform a pre-teen bedroom.

Bedroom decorating for your pre-teen is all about compromise. While your child may want to paint the walls black, you may be struggling with the idea of putting away the toys and stuffed animals for a more mature bedroom look. The pre-teen age group is stuck in a position between little kid and teenager, so bedroom decor needs to reflect this growth and change. This can be accomplished relatively inexpensively in many instances.

Seating

The tween bedroom is a sanctuary for alone time, time with friends and doing homework. Create adequate seating and space for these activities with inexpensive beanbag or papasan chairs. A hinged toy box that is no longer used can be converted into a window seat, with the addition of a cushion and a coat of paint to match the rest of the room.

Colors

Bright colors attract pre-teens, and paint is one of the most inexpensive ways to change a room. Consider girly purple and pink shades for girls, and masculine blues or earth tones for boys. Compromise with a funky-colored accent wall with milder complementary tones for the adjoining three walls.

Bedding

When it's time to say goodbye to cartoon-themed sheets and comforters, mixing and matching bedding pieces can be an inexpensive alternative to purchasing a new bedding set. Create a funky, Bohemian look with mismatched colors and textures. Choose a color that your pre-teen likes best for the quilt. This should be a color similar to the dominant color in the room, or the color of an accent wall. Shop together at thrift and discount stores to find unique sheets, throw blankets and pillows that your child likes. Assemble the mismatched set with throw pillows and lampshades that match the dominant color to complete the theme.

Art

Use wall art and other accessories as part of the bedroom theme. A bulletin board can hold a collage of photos from times with friends. If your child is active in sports, enlarge team action photos for framed wall art. Hanging a mural is another option for decorating to facilitate the changing tastes of pre-teens, as a mural is easily removable. Consider a hanging canvas mural of a cityscape, animal print or favorite activity.
