Style Your Bedroom

Decorate your bedroom to suit your personal style and tastes.

Many elements need to be considered when choosing a bedroom style. Consider your personality, colors you are attracted to and the purpose of the room. You may be a bright, bold, expressive person, but if you want to feel relaxed so that you will drift off to sleep at night easily, you might choose calming colors in your room, such as pastel or neutral shades. You may be drawn to vintage patterns or modern, clean lines in a contemporary look. Be sure to compare several different styles before you decorate your bedroom.

Instructions

1. Review home decor magazines and websites that display photos of various bedroom styles. In order to be able to determine which style of bedroom decor is most suited to you and your personality, you need to become familiar with the different styles. Some bedroom styles include Asian, classic, country, cottage, eclectic, designer, modern, romantic, patriotic, shabby chic, seasonal, tropical, vintage and Southwest. Make notes of which styles appeal to you most as you scan pictures of bedroom styles.

2. Choose your main colors for your bedroom walls, area rugs and accessories. Review your wardrobe, noting any repetition of colors, patterns and styles for inspiration. Jot down words that describe your personality, such as introvert, bold, calm or shy, and determine which colors best represent your personality traits. Keep in mind that the bedroom is most often used for sleeping, so any vibrant colors, such as bold reds or bright oranges, may not have a calming effect, such as light blues, soft grays or more neutral colors.

3. Make your bed a stunning focal point in your bedroom by choosing bedding that reflects your personality. A lacy bed skirt with a flowered comforter would be appropriate for a vintage bedroom style. If you like a sleek, contemporary look, choose a solid, neutral-colored bedspread such as beige, gray, light brown or light green. Ensure that you choose a headboard to match whatever bedroom style you have chosen. A decorative white metal headboard would suit a Victorian style bedroom, however, a fabric-covered headboard in a solid color would be more appropriate for a modern bedroom style. Also, consider painting the wall behind your bed a different color than the rest of the walls. This creates an accent wall and draws the eye immediately to the bed.

4. Select lighting for your bedroom to achieve the style you have chosen. Lampshades, for example, can contribute to the mood of the room or you can use a spotlights to highlight a picture on a wall or to brighten up a dark corner in the room. Chandeliers achieve an elegant and sophisticated look in a bedroom and come in many different styles such as vintage, contemporary and Asian. Be sure to consider if you need a bedside lamp for reading or sewing in bed.

5. Determine what window treatments you need. Window treatments should match the bedroom style you have chosen, and may be bold or subtle. Frilly, flowery drapes may enhance a romantic or Victorian-themed style, however, you may want to use bamboo blinds for an Asian-styled bedroom or white shutters for a tropical-style bedroom.

6. Complete your bedroom style with coordinating furniture and area rugs. Use a shaggy, white rug for a romantic look, for example, and a high-back wing chair. Consider wicker or rattan furniture for a cottage-style bedroom. Sleek designs and metal accents work well in a contemporary room.
