Find Odd Dining Chairs

Director's chairs aren't just for the movies; they could be one of your dining chairs.

If the thought of having a dining suite composed of odd chairs appeals to you, you needn't go far to acquire a mismatched dining set. Finding an odd dining chair will probably only require you to hop in your car and do a little hunting at some local stores. Some of them will be big commercial stores, but others will be that corner shop in the old district of town. However, with a little patience and creativity, you'll have a director's chair, a hand-painted chair and a chair made of twigs all sitting around your dining table in no time.

Instructions

1. Scout out secondhand stores. These stores have furniture that's mismatched, including table and chair sets. Many places will allow you to buy a single piece as opposed to a set.

2. Look through the classifieds to find where the estate and garage sales are in your area and attend them. These events offer you plenty of options for odd dining chairs. Additionally, estates sales teem with furniture pieces from a bygone era, making the likelihood of you finding a chair that no one else will have even greater.

3. Ask around at furniture specialty shops. For example, if you live in a big city, you may find an outlet for furniture designers. These pieces sometimes stand on the cutting edge of design and feature oddly shaped legs or new ergonomic designs.

4. Look up local craftsmen. Sometimes these artisans specialize in furniture. Visit them and look through their portfolio of pictures as well as at the furniture they have in their shop. Additionally, ask them if they can create special orders. If so, work together to come up with chairs that will fit your needs.

5. Call around to import stores in your area. These stores specialize in unusual furniture. You'll find pieces from the Far East, from small shops in Europe or even places below the equator. Buy these in singles or pairs and add them to your eclectic dining set.

6. Make odd dining chairs when all else fails. One of the simplest ways to do this is to find old chairs and cover them with a coat of paint or with a decoupage design. These techniques allow you to cover the chairs in their entirety, and you'll have the option of painting every chair a different color or decoupaging a different design on each one.
