Create Rustic Cabin Bedroom Walls

Use natural pine or stain the wood to give it warmth.

Even if you live in an urban or suburban area, you can indulge your dream of a rustic cabin retreat. The dominant decorating feature in most cabin decors is wood - especially knotty pine. Use wood wainscoating and trim to warm up the room, creating a primitive cabin feel. Visit decorating shops or online stores to find cabin-related artwork, sconces and draperies to finish the look. Select a theme for your room, such as fish, boats or bears, and add a few details that reflect this theme. Don't overdo it, though, or the look becomes cliched.

Instructions

1. Install tongue and groove paneling to create a warm, cabin look. Cover the entire wall, or just the bottom half of the wall only and paint the top in a warm, complementary shade. Some paneling is unfinished and rough, while other paneling is smooth and finished. Although rough paneling adds character, it is more difficult to clean and maintain.

2. Finish the look with wood trim in the same shade as the paneling. Trim windows and doors with decorative trim. In a large bedroom, use whole logs to support beams or add a decorative element.

3. Hang cabin-inspired artwork featuring outdoor themes. Look for paintings with warm, natural colors, and use large wooden frames. Install light sconces on the walls that reflect the cabin theme. Typical motifs include sconces made from tin or iron that feature animals or trees.

4. Finish the cabin look with warm window treatments. Draperies made of heavy cotton, canvas, burlap or corduroy complement the rugged wall paneling.
