Measure A Light Fixture Over The Dining Table

Measure to match your light size to your dining table.

Measuring your light fixture over your dining table is not rocket science but don't leave it up to guesswork. A too-small fixture can seem out of place over your table. A fixture that is too large could overpower the room and cause you to bump your head when sitting down or getting up from the table. Placing your light at the wrong height over your table could unbalance your room and not provide enough light to eat or study by. Take a few measurements before purchasing a light fixture for your dining table.

Instructions

1. Measure the width of your dining table.

2. Deduct 12 inches from the width measurement of your dining table to obtain your maximum light fixture width. For example, if your dining table measures 48 inches in width, the light fixture should not measure over 36 inches wide.

3. Measure from the top of your dining table to the ceiling and deduct 30 inches. For example, if you have an 8-foot ceiling and a 30-inch-high table, the bottom of your light should hang 36 inches from the ceiling.
