Decorate Green Dining Rooms

Bright green chairs add a modern touch to the dining room.

Your dining room tends to be more formal than an eat-in kitchen or a dining area in a living room. Make the most of dining room decor by giving it a burst of color. A green color palette or green accents in the dining room may have a saturated look, a muted aesthetic or a shabby chic effect, depending upon the shade and finishes you select. You can quickly update a green dining room by adding bright white dishes with green details, or you can invest more time and money in a full dining room redesign.

Instructions

1. Pick your greens with care. What looks cheerful and springlike in the light of midday can turn sickly on a winter evening. Plan your green dining room decor by covering a canvas or piece of wood with the green you want to use and hang it where you will use it. Then watch how the color changes during the course of the day to make sure you have an ideal hue.

2. Paint your dining room with green accents. A monochromatic green dining room tends to overpower the space, but an accent wall in apple green or stenciled wall trim in muted sage green adds vivid color. Stick with semi-gloss finish on trim, doors and window frames and a satin finish on walls.

3. Break up the green with a complementary hue. White or cream on adjoining walls or as the background in wallpaper creates great contrast with green dining room walls. Olive green works well against stone gray.

4. Furnish a green dining room with focal point pieces. A Formica table may feature green diner chairs for a retro look, while a dark wooden table may feature chairs upholstered with green details. Furniture hardware in gold or copper combines well with many shades of green.

5. Illuminate your green dining room to make the most of your color scheme. Overhead fluorescent lighting kills the nuances of green, so opt for a striking chandelier or pendant lights in sleek fixtures instead.

6. Accessorize your table with functional and stylish pieces that highlight the green. Simple glass plates on a neutral runner make dishes fade to the background so surrounding decor can stand out. If you prefer, pick up the green as a detail on your plate pattern, or use green-tinted glass for glasses, bowls or vases.
