Restroom Sanitation Checklist

Sanitize your restrooms in a methodical way.

Customers will often form opinions about your business from the impressions they have of your restrooms. Restroom sanitation may seem like a minor detail, but keeping these facilities clean and sanitary is an important part of making an overall good impression. It also helps to prevent the spread of germs and makes your customers more confident in the cleanliness of the rest of your business.

Cleaning Solutions

After your restroom is clean, make it sanitary by killing germs that may be present on the fixtures. Make a sanitizing solution for this purpose. Use a commercial sanitizer and follow the directions on the package, or use a solution of 1 cup of bleach mixed with 1 gallon of water. Wear rubber gloves when working with sanitizing solutions.

Sink

Clean the sink, including the outside portion of the fixture and any exposed pipes below it. Spray sanitizer solution over the entire sink, inside and out. Allow the solution to sit on the sink for five minutes. Rinse the sink with a clean cloth and clear water.

Toilet and Urinal

Pour 1 cup of bleach into the toilet and urinal and allow it to sit for five minutes. Swish the water and bleach around inside the toilet, making sure to get the solution up under the rim. Flush the toilet. Spray sanitizer over the outside of the toilet and allow it to sit for five minutes. Rinse the toilet with a clean cloth and clear water and allow it to air dry.

Hand Contact Surfaces

Sanitize other parts of the bathroom with which customers may have contact. Spray solution onto the outside of trash cans, sanitary napkin dispensers, light switches and doorknobs. Leave the solution in place for five minutes, then rinse and allow them to air dry.
