Make Night Curtains

Having curtains that block the light is critical for getting a good night sleep. However, curtains made of a heavy fabric are not always enough to create complete darkness in a room. While you want your windows to let light and warmth in during the day, you also want them to make your room very dark at night. The best solution in this situation is to make night curtains. With the right materials, it is very easy to make night curtains that can help keep light out of your room.

Instructions

1. Install your curtain rod over the window, ideally at least 3 inches above the window frame, using a screwdriver and the included mounting hardware. Install the rod several inches wider than the window.

2. Measure from the top of the rod to the bottom of the window frame, or wherever you'd like to have the curtains end. Add 7 inches to this measurement to calculate the length for each curtain panel.

3. Measure the width of the curtain rod from end to end. Multiply the width of the curtain rod by 1 1/2 and add 6 inches to that number. Divide that number in half. This will give you the width measurement for each curtain panel.

4. Purchase curtain fabric using your calculated measurements. Buy blackout fabric that is 3 inches shorter and 3 inches narrower than the curtain fabric.

5. Lay the curtain fabric for the first panel flat on the table with the wrong side of the fabric facing up. Lay the blackout fabric for one panel on top of the curtain fabric, wrong side up, and center it so that 1 1/2 inches of curtain fabric is visible all the way around the blackout fabric.

6. Fold the top edge of the curtain fabric over 3/4 inch so it is just touching the edge of the blackout fabric. Fold the fabric over another 3/4 inch, over the edge of the blackout fabric. Secure the fabric with straight pins before sewing. Repeat with the other three sides of the curtain panel.

7. Fold the top of the curtain panel over 4 inches, secure with pins and then sew, creating a little sleeve. Slide the curtain panel onto the rod through the sleeve you have just created.

8. Repeat steps to create the other panel.
