Mount An Undermount Bathroom Sink

Mount an Undermount Bathroom Sink

An undermount bathroom sink will give you a lifetime of leak-free use if you install it correctly. If you are remodeling a bathroom and using the existing countertop, measure your sink opening before purchasing an undermount sink. New countertops need a hole cut out using the template provided with the new sink. Hire a professional to cut marble or granite countertops for your sink installation to avoid an expensive mistake.

Instructions

1. Place the countertop face up on a on a set of sawhorses. Set the cutout template that comes with the new sink, and trace the cutout onto the countertop with a pencil. You will be tracing the location of the sink and the three holes for the faucet onto the countertop.

2. Drill holes inside the traced corners of the countertop with a drill and 1-inch hole saw. Cut the traced template out of the countertop with a jigsaw. Drill the holes for the faucet using an appropriate-size hole saw. Sand the edges smooth with fine-grit sandpaper.

3. Turn the countertop over so the bottom is facing up. Lay the top of the sink on the countertop, while a helper looks under the countertop to center the sink. Trace around the corners of the sink with a pencil after centering. Lift the sink up and set the sink with the bowl facing up.

4. Clean the top rim of the sink and the mounting edge of the countertop with denatured alcohol. This will prepare the surfaces for the silicone caulk.

5. Apply a ¼-inch bead of silicone caulk around the top rim of the undermount sink with a caulking gun. Cover the entire perimeter of the top rim as this is what will seal the sink to the countertop. Set the top of the sink over the countertop, placing the sink between the corner tracings. Press the sink firmly onto the countertop.

6. Position the mounting clips in place around the sink. Drill pilot holes in the countertop for the mounting screws. Take a drill bit smaller than your mounting screws and place the bit against the outside edge of the countertop. Position the tip of the bit halfway between the thickness of the countertop. Place a piece of colored tape around the bit to mark the halfway point. This will prevent you from drilling all the way through the countertop when making the pilot holes.

7. Drill pilot holes for all the clips around the sink using the tape as a depth guide. Position one end of the clip over the sink and the other end over the countertop. Mount the clip with the securing screw and a Phillips-head screwdriver.

8. Install the countertop on your bathroom sink cabinet according to the countertop manufacturer's instructions. Wait one day before attaching the plumbing and faucet to the sink and countertop. This will allow the silicone to set.
