Used bedroom furniture can save you hundreds of dollars. Plus, older furniture is usually made out of actual wood instead of the standard melamine. This allows you to find unique pieces that aren't at furniture stores No one else in your neighborhood will have it. Plus, you can make your first apartment look fantastic on a budget. Used bedroom furniture even works well if you need to furnish a nursery.

1. Simplify what you need. Look around your room & decide what you can reuse & what you can't. You might think that everything needs to go. However, the more you look around for used bedroom furniture, the better your free furniture may seem. Envision how it would be with a new finish or if you removed some of the dated elements. See what you can do without. You might not need a bench at the end of your bed, a matching vanity, or even a second dresser. See if you can make room for a dresser in your closet. This way, it won't have to match the rest of the items & it will make your space seem bigger.
2. Hit the curb. Check out high scale areas on trash day. Often times you can get used bedroom furniture for free. If you are on a really tight budget, go to yard sales at the end of the day & see if they will strike you a deal on the stuff they haven't been able to sell.
3. Check out freecycle. Most major cities have a place where people can give away their unwanted goods. Just make sure that you read through all of the guidelines before you post a request for free used bedroom furniture. You'll probably need a truck if you go this route. You'll also need to check several times a day so you get in on the really nice pieces.
4. Work around a missing drawer. This is a tell tale sign of used bedroom furniture. You can always get a great deal on the stuff that is missing one drawer. Don't let this be a reason for you to pass over the piece. Look for several square wooden baskets that you can sit in the bottom of the piece. Hardware can be expensive, but check your local hardware store. They often have a small clearance section that is cheaper than regular home improvement stores. If all else fails you can always spray paint your existing hardware. They even have spray paint that comes in a hammered metal finish.
6. Turn it into a set. The problem with used bedroom furniture is that you rarely find all of the pieces that you need at once. This means that you have to scavenge & collect over time. Many designers have cautioned against using entire bedroom sets because it ends up looking like a page from a catalog instead of a home. They mix & match things together that are the same finish or style. This can either look like a dorm room or very designer. When choosing your finish decide whether you want dark or light wood, or if you are going to paint everything. This way your turns into a set that no one else has.
7. Get out the paint brush. Give your piece a light sanding. If it's made out of melamine you might need some special primer. Painted furniture is all the rage right now. It can cost hundreds of dollars. You can recreate the look with whatever leftover paint you have in your garage. You can paint your used bedroom furniture a modern black or a shabby chic distressed white.
8. Check out hotel liquidators. Larger cities have entire stores that just specialize in taking the furniture from hotels when they upgrade. Sometimes hotels will advertise on craigslist. Granted, you might not be comfortable on one of those awful hotel mattresses. However, look for solid wood pieces such as dressers, headboards, or armories that can be found for a fraction of the price. Mix & match from different sets that have the same finish for a custom look that no one will guess is used bedroom furniture.
