Leaking Bathroom Faucet Repair

Repairing your leaking bathroom faucet saves you the cost of calling a plumber.

As a homeowner, you do not have to tolerate a leaking faucet simply because you do not want to have to pay a plumber a high price to fix it. A leaking faucet costs you extra on your monthly water bill, and will only continue to leak faster and waste more water until corrected. Fixing the leak, however, requires few tools or plumbing expertise, making it an easy job for you, the homeowner, to accomplish.

Instructions

1. Turn off the water for the faucet by closing the house's main water valve. Turn the faucet on all the way to check that no water comes out of the spout.

2. Use either a Phillips screwdriver or Allen wrench to remove the faucet handles' set screws, which are located either under a cap in the exact center of the handle or in a small hole on the side of the handle. Pull the handles off the faucet once you have removed the set screws, either by hand or using a handle puller tool.

3. Pull off any metal sleeves on the faucet, then remove retaining nuts or plastic adapters using an adjustable wrench. Pull out any metal pins or clips from the middle or sides of the valve assembly using needle-nose pliers.

4. Twist the valve stem or cartridge out of the water pipe using a wrench or cartridge puller tool. Coat the replacement's threads with plumber's grease and thread it into the water pipe, then replace the other parts of the faucet you removed before.

5. Turn on the water to the faucet, and then turn on the faucet. Inspect the spout as well as around the handles for any leaks.
