Divide Room Into A Bedroom For Two Boys

Many families divide bedrooms to fit multiple kids, either for the simple reason that the home doesn't have enough bedrooms for each kid to have his own or because they want the kids to learn to share. In either case, divide the room to suit your boys' ages, interests, privacy needs and color preferences -- as well as your own preferences and budget.

Instructions

1. Divide your boys' bedroom in two with the use of a visual divider if the boys are young and don't care about having their "own" space or if the room is small and you don't want to make it seem smaller with a more substantial divider. Paint half the room in one boy's favorite color and the other half the other boy's favorite color. Or hang two sets of curtains from the ceiling in the middle of the room, with the curtains on each side matching that boy's interests. For example, one side of the room could have zebra-print curtains for a budding wildlife enthusiast, while the other side could feature baseball fabric for a young ballplayer.

2. Use a piece of furniture as a functional divider between the two boys' spaces if the room is small and you need every bit of space you can, or if you have duplicate furniture items that make sense as dividers. For example, set two bookcases or dressers back-to-back to have storage space specifically for each boy. Or set up a shared shelf as a divider. This solution is particularly suitable for boys close in age who share toys.

3. Separate the room into two spaces with a solid divider, such as a wall, if the boys are prone to squabbling over territory or if they are old enough to want and need privacy. Build a floating wall down the middle of the room and let each boy decorate his side. Ensure that the wall does not violate fire codes to keep your boys safe.

4. Split the room with a silly divider if you like whimsical decor or if you want the divider to inspire mutual, imaginative play. For example, if you hang curtains of silvery beads between the boys' areas, they can pretend to be jungle explorers passing beneath a roaring waterfall.
