Japanese-themed bathroom
Aside from being a functional room, a bathroom can be a good room to explore exotic expressions of your personality through decor. Bathrooms in many places, such as Japan, are excellent examples of creative use of very limited space. Creating a one-of-a-kind, visually interesting space does not have to be expensive. Often simple decor can create a fascinating, intimate space.
Overall Style
The first thing to think about when considering bathroom decor is the overall style of the room. Do you want a simple Japanese Zen style? What about a more ornate Chinese style? Other options include French Provincial or an English floral style. Your budget may define the style. Japanese Zen motifs are simple and require fewer accents, and often can be better for tight budgets.
Paint Options
Once you have decided on a style, you may want to paint the walls a color appropriate to the style on which you have settled. Very interesting visual spaces can be created by using unusual colors. For example, in a Japanese Zen style bathroom, painting one or two walls black with the remaining walls white can create an unusual sense of space. Black and white are yin-yang symbols in Japanese art. If you are considering a Chinese motif, red is considered an auspicious color and one, some or all of the walls could be painted red. If you are going for a softer European feel to the bathroom, the walls can be painted softer pastels. Something to consider is using sponge-painting techniques to add texture to the wall. Sponge-painting techniques work well for any paint color.
Easy Decor Options
Decor options often should start with the shower curtain and window dressings. In a small space, these two items have the highest visual impact. If you are working toward a Japanese-style bathroom, using a simple, but striking,
Appropriate accent items will depend on the space available. For example, a long counter with multiple sinks offers more options for adding accents than a single basin mounted on the wall. Accents should complement the color scheme of the walls and shower curtain. If possible, having similar geometric shapes also helps hold a bathroom together visually.
Aside from functional accents, such as soap dishes and toothbrush holders, other accents that can work beautifully in a bathroom are fresh or faux flowers and candles.
