Make A Bedroom Look Contemporary

Contemporary bedroom

It's possible to make a bedroom look contemporary by making a few changes in the room; you don't even need to replace the furniture. "Contemporary" refers to a current trend and trends change on a cyclical basis that no one can define or anticipate. Therefore, if you are planning to make a bedroom look contemporary, the key is to simply make it not look dated. Take away dated items and refresh the room with the latest colors and current styles to make it contemporary.

Instructions

1. Check out current colors.

Look at the current color scheme in the bedroom. If the color scheme is over ten years old, chances are good that it is dated. Look for colors currently shown in the bedroom display areas at luxury department stores and furniture stores. Peruse decorating magazines for contemporary bedroom ideas. Take notes on the different colors you see in displays and in print.

2. Window sheers

Replace window treatments with something simple. Fussy ruffles and fabric cornices have become dated. Contemporary furnishings tend to be energy-efficient and "green" (eco-friendly). Install textured window shades or blinds that keep the room cool, helping to keep electric bills down. Hang window curtains high above the window, creating a look that suggests the window is very tall, even if it is not. Most modern curtains come in lengths of 96 inches or longer. Install window sheers in addition to the shades and drapes for a modern, dreamy effect that suits a bedroom.

3. Lose the pillows and old-fashioned comforters.

Get rid of the fluffy comforter. Today's modern bed topper is a thin, sleek, coverlet placed atop a blanket that remains unseen. Duvet covers inserted over slender quilted bedspreads are also modern. Lose the multitude of bed pillows as well. The pillows on a contemporary bed are used for sleeping on, not for merely decorative purposes. The heavily layered look of decorative pillows placed upon the bed has been around a long time and it is dated.

4. Examine the bedroom walls. Take down, or cover, old wallpaper. Paint over wallpaper using a latex-based primer, followed by a coat of latex paint. (Never use oil-based paint over wallpaper because the oil properties can loosen the wallpaper paste.) Determine if current walls are painted in colors that were popular in past decades. For example, maroon, mauve or forest green were interior colors that were popular over a decade ago. As a rule of thumb, paint over any walls that are over ten years old. Paint walls a shade of taupe for a contemporary look that is timeless. Let the wall color soothe you and use accessories for color in the room.

5. Remove artwork that is not intriguing. Hang a metal wall sculpture of flowers, for example, instead of a framed picture of a flowers.Three-dimensional art is contemporary compared to framed art. Keep decorative accessories and wall art to a minimum. Clear table tops and dressers of clutter for a sleek, modern look. Hide useful items away in baskets stored under the bed or in a drawer or closet. Creating a bedroom with modern window treatments, bed linens, walls and accessories will result in a contemporary room that you can be proud of.
