Decorate A Dark Basement Bedroom

Your basement can be converted into a beautiful bedroom.

If your home has a basement and you want to make the most of the space, one good idea is to convert the space into a bedroom. Since the basement tends to be darker than the rest of the house, implementing a few decorating steps that will make the space brighter can give the basement bedroom a warm and relaxing feel.

Instructions

1. Add a bed to the basement that will make the space more lively. A bed frame made of brass can add warmth to the space; a frame made of white-painted wood will add brightness to the bedroom.

2. Cover the bed with linens that complement the frame colors. Yellow and orange pillowcases and sheets will look great with a gold comforter on a bronze bed, and contrasting colors like red and kelly green make a white bed even brighter.

3. Add an area rug to the basement bedroom that includes plush fibers in a vibrant color. Select the most noticeable color in your design scheme to liven up the basement space; if you're going for a black and white theme, a winter white rug in the center of the bedroom will grab your attention as soon as you walk into the basement.

4. Include a rocking chair or reading chair that coordinates with the color of the bed, and place it in the most prominent corner of the room.

5. Use brightly colored throw pillows and blankets to adorn the chair and bed. A bright blue blanket draped over the corner of the bed will pep up white bed linens; gold or bronze throw pillows in a black or chocolate brown reading chair will make the item especially warm and inviting.

6. Add wooden shelves to the room -- either bookshelves, or some that can be installed on the walls. Paint the shelves to match your room's decor.

7. Install small lights in the shelves to slightly illuminate the bedroom and showcase any items you want to display on the shelves.

8. Include large, colorful vases in the bedroom decor. Place the vases in the corners of the room, or use smaller varieties to display on the shelves.

9. Fill the vases with synthetic flowers in colors like yellow, white, orange and red.

10. Add lamps to the room to reduce the darkness in the basement. Include a bright lamp that illuminates the entire space in a corner of the basement, and place smaller lamps on top of the bookshelves, along with the flower vases.

11. Add flashy curtains to the basement space to cover the windows and add more color to the area. Or, use the curtains to cover the pipes or power boxes in the basement.
