Design Your Dream Bedroom

Bedroom

Whether you fantasize about living in a posh room at the White House or a fantastical mermaid's lair, with a little planning and imagination, you can design the room of your dreams. By laying out a plan of action, you can effectively design a bedroom that will give you sweet dreams for years to come. Factor in budget, the space you have to work with, and voila!--you're ready to make your dream room a reality.

Instructions

1. Ocean

Choose your theme. A simple foundational theme will make your planning easier, and you can add details later. Stick to something basic. For a kid's room (or a room for a creative adult!), themes might be the ocean, cinema or the night sky. Keep away from overly specific themes that will limit your creativity. If the first idea is a particular superhero, shoot for a broader subject, such as "comic books," to give yourself more elements to work with.

2. Superhero

Gather resources. Now that you have your theme picked out, gather any resources or photos you can find on the subject. Back to the "comic book" room, some resources might be the comics out of the Sunday newspaper or a book on superheroes.

3. Wallet and pen

Prioritize. Think about what your budget will allow you to accomplish. If you've set aside several thousand dollars for a remodel, you won't have to be too picky. More realistically, you've set aside (at least) a few hundred dollars to put into this project. First choose the thing you need most. If you do not have a bed for the room, that will take a great chunk of your money. Maybe your walls are crying out for a coat of paint to complement your colorful theme. Make a wish list for your ideal room with an estimated guess on how much each item will cost. Then pick and choose within your budget.

4. Plain bed

Work around a focal point. In many cases, your bed will be the focal point of the room. If you have not already purchased a bed and have an appropriate budget, you may be able to enhance your theme with this purchase. You can choose from a romantic or sophisticated canopy or a loft bed for a casual room for a young adult. If you're working with an existing piece that does not reflect your theme, dress it up. Putting a new coat of paint on an old wooden bed can give it a whole new feel.

5. Bright bed

Add the finishing touches. Without getting out your wallet yet, shop online or in several stores. Think of what creative touches you can add to go along with your theme. The creator of a "comic book" room might opt for black and white linens (like the colors of newspaper) or character prints to go on the walls. Have fun, but limit your accessories to avoid overkill. You want the effect to be, "ooh, that looks great," and not "ok, ok...we get it! you like comics!"
