Decorating your master bedroom--even on a tight budget--gives you the opportunity to add some of your personality into the room so that it becomes a space you can enjoy and relax in. Turn your master bedroom into the retreat you envision by being creative and making smart decorating decisions. Use your time and hands to create the pieces and elements you desire instead of paying for them. In the end, you'll most likely enjoy your master bedroom even more because of the work you put into it.
Instructions
1. Decide on a theme and color scheme for your bedroom. As you shop for furniture, bedding, accessories or other objects for your room you'll need to ask yourself if it fits in with the theme and color scheme you have planned. If not, don't waste your money.
2. Make a list of the things you need to include in the room, such as ample storage space for your clothes, and then what you want to include. Keep this list with you so you get what you need first, then spend on what you want.
3. Sell, donate or discard any clothes, furniture or accessories that you no longer want. Keeping them around will only add to a cluttered feeling.
4. Re-purpose as much of your bedroom furniture as you can. If you have to buy all new furniture, consider yard sales, second-hand stores or discount furniture stores. The pieces don't have to match because you can sand and stain or paint the furniture. Only purchase pieces that you need because an over-furnished room usually feels cluttered and will probably overwhelm you instead of help you to relax.
5. Paint the bedroom walls. If you don't have enough money--or simply don't want to paint all of the walls--only paint the wall behind your bed (or another wall) to serve as an accent wall. Paint stripes, scrolls or other designs or use wallpaper on your accent wall.
6. Hang curtains, sheer fabric, a mirror or large picture frames above the bed. Picture frames can hold any image you desire. Take a picture of your favorite landmark, flower, people or object and have the photo blown up to fit your frame. Another option is paint a design on a blank canvas. If you aren't artistically inclined, ask a friend.
7. Purchase new bedding from the clearance aisles of discount stores or update your current bedding by making a duvet cover out of two flat sheets, then stuffing it with your old quilt or comforter. New pillow shams and a couple of decorative pillows will complete your bed. Purchase or make curtains that coordinate with your bedding if possible.
8. Spruce up the rest of the room with inexpensive accessories found in clearance aisles, second-hand stores or discount stores. Bedside lamps, silk plants, candles, a throw rug and a vase for a bouquet of fresh or silk flowers will complete the room.
