Bedrooms should be peaceful, rejuvenating spaces that support, nurture and facilitate sleep and rejuvenation. They should not contain clutter, unwanted items or broken objects. Modern living may place certain requirements on bedrooms that are best left to other rooms like exercise and work spaces. Decorating the bedroom using Feng Shui can serve to enhance personal relationships and relieve modern constraints.
Promote Rest
Bed positioning can promote rest and relaxation. Create a safe place to sleep by placing the bed against a solid wall. Solid wood headboards can add a second layer of security for the sleeper. Enhance sleep by creating a bed that softens sharp points--use curved and circular pillows, curved corners on the headboard and soothing colors in peach tones, calming blues and soft greens. Choose patterns for comforters and linens that are soft and not angular. Circular side tables further remove sharp corners from the sleeping area.
Create Connection
The Feng Shui bedroom should reflect the desired state of relationship--with an existing partner or a desired partner. Create this imagery by reinforcing symmetry. Use pairs and doubles as part of the decor--two bedside tables, two lamps, two chairs, a double- or queen-size bed. Art work should reflect two objects or people and not singular objects or people. Pairs of singles will decrease the likelihood of becoming a romantic pair but may draw more friends. Replace all the art and objects in the bedroom with this new idea in mind and note the changes in relationships.
Remove the World
Remove mental clutter to relieve and separate the mind while dreaming. Use screens to block the view of reminders of work and the outside world. Conceal exercise equipment, desks, televisions and computers by using portable folding screens, cabinets or armoires that can be closed. Use beautiful fabrics as curtains that can be tied back during use and released before sleeping. Add a drapery treatment to windows that can be opened and closed easily--mini blinds alone will not block the light or serve to dampen noise from the outside.
Add Inspiration
A bedroom should be inspirational. Place a favorite piece of art directly opposite the bed so that you can enjoy its image before falling asleep and first thing upon waking. Rotate favorite art to other areas in the room as a new piece captures and inspires. Photographs and depictions of desired personal qualities or physical objects and experiences make good choices for bedroom wall décor. Create a personal shrine somewhere in the bedroom that can be used for a daily focusing practice.
