Create A Zen Spa Bedroom

Zen is a Buddhist approach to life and is Japanese for the Chinese word, "chan," which means "quietude." Designing a Zen spa style bedroom requires only a desire for a peaceful, quiet space. Think clean lines and harmony. Keep it simple. Remember this as you create your own Zen style and explore new ideas. A knowledge of Asian decorating is not necessary. Just ask yourself what you can do to have a bedroom you can completely relax, meditate and sleep peacefully in. Make your bedroom your retreat.

Instructions

1. Remove all clutter from your bedroom using storage boxes. Clutter jars the senses, which is the opposite effect you are looking for with Zen decorating.

2. Clean your bedroom thoroughly. Start out with a fresh palette for decorating and inspiration.

3. Look around and remove any item that doesn't belong in a peaceful environment. An assortment of items in your bedroom is not Zen--you want everything to flow.

4. Make your mantra, which is a phrase or word you repeat, "less is more." Take an item out if it makes an area look too "busy."

5. Make a list of neutral colors that appeal to you. The colors do not have to be drab. Ideally, they would soothe your senses, just like nature. Some examples include the following: whites, sand tones, grays, violets, purples, browns, light greens and light blues.

6. Choose a color to be the main theme color for your bedroom. Paint your walls a soothing, cool pale blue, for example, and work with this and various shades of pale blue in your bedroom.

7. Add a Japanese item in your bedroom if you desire, such as a Shoji screen--a traditional, Japanese folding screen--which is inexpensive.
