How you decorate your daughter's bedroom will depend on her tastes.
Options are endless for decorating a girl's room. Pink often is the color of choice for little girls, but don't feel the need to limit yourself to that hue. Try a soft violet, pale yellow or subdued mint green. How you decorate will depend on your daughter's age and preferences, but there are some general ideas that can be adapted to her tastes. You also can add a lot of girly accessories or keep things fairly simple and let the colors and basic design stand out.
Canopy
Little girls love canopy beds, but it isn't always practical to buy one. The posts can interfere with making the bed, the canopy gathers dust and they can be expensive.
An alternative is to create a faux canopy. Cute, inexpensive and out of the way, this canopy attaches to the ceiling above the bed. This canopy works best if the bed is in a corner of the room.
Cut two 1-inch-thick by 10-inch-wide boards so that one is 2 inches longer than the bed length and one is 2 inches longer than the bed width. Connect them at right angles to one another using screws and wood glue. Brace the inside with a triangular piece of wood that fits inside the corner and is attached to both boards. Decorate the inside and the outside with patterned shelf paper, paint or cover with fabric. Add a small ruffle around the bottom of the boards. Attach to the ceiling over the bed using angle brackets. Make sure it is solidly attached and won't fall. Your daughter now has a canopy over her bed.
Message Center
Get some fabric in a color and pattern that your daughter likes. Cover a framed corkboard with the fabric, pinning it to the board all the way around with fancy thumbtacks. Turn the fabric under along the edges so that it has a finished appearance. Be sure it is stretched tightly, so there are no gaps or saggy places. Hang it above her desk or dresser. Using the same fabric, cover two cloth lampshades by gluing the fabric (use fabric glue) at the top and bottom of the shades. Use plain, cylindrical lampshades and turn the edge of the cloth under as you go. Keep the fabric snug and overlap the seam. Place these on the desk or dresser by the message board to create a cute, personalized message center.
Borders and Curtains
Stencil borders around your daughter's room. If she likes pink, give her soft pink walls and stencil bright pink and red flowers along the walls. If she is an animal lover, use a soft color for the walls and stencil kittens and puppies around the room. For more detail, use wall borders that feature cute and cuddly baby animals. Give her soft, sheer curtains that billow in the breeze. Choose curtains that have a simple design, such as polka dots, in colors that complement the room. For little girls, try draping a feather boa along the top of her curtains, adding some fun to the room.
