Modern Bedroom Styles

Modern design is hard to define. Some people describe modern design as elements of mid-century modern, while many others use today's definition, which is new and innovative. Whatever the definition, modern designs reject floral motifs and Victorian aesthetics. Instead, most modern design elements are united by the presence of fine lines and natural, minimalist simplicity along with bright colors. When you work with a modern design, form must follow function. Although bright colors are promoted in modern designing, the overall impression of a modern room should be comfortable and inviting.

Accessory Styles

Choose accessories with contrasting textures and materials. Choose chrome or brushed steel hardware for drawers and wood cabinetry. Instead of traditional framed paintings, using large metal sculptures and wall hangings will provide modern wall decor. Select quality over quantity when selecting accessories for a modern bedroom. Instead of accessorizing with 10 pillows on the bed, choose four pillows in colors that complement your decor. Avoid creating disorder. Instead, use large, impressive features such as oversized mirrors to make the room look bigger than its actual size.

Furniture Styles

The furniture in modern bedrooms is nothing like elaborate Victorian furniture, which is extremely decorative. Instead, tables, beds, chairs and decorations are used to celebrate the minimalist design idea, with soft curves and geometric angles to create a functional living space. To use a monochromatic color scheme, choose furniture items that match the wall color. For a more modern and dramatic look, select pieces of furniture in bold, unexpected colors, such as a red headboard in a beige room or an orange settee in an off-white room. For decorative items such as tables, look for pieces made from underused materials for a bedroom such as wire or plastic.

Fabric Styles

The goal of modern bedroom design is to create clean lines and cohesive, functional sleeping areas. Avoiding unnecessary visual clutter helps promote a modern design in the bedroom. Avoid wallpaper in a modern bedroom, especially wallpaper with patterns that are particularly busy or floral. Instead, walls should be panted in contemporary colors. Consider using monochromatic color schemes in gray, beige or white. To add color to a modern sleep space, choose a bold horizontal band of contrasting paint color such as burnt yellow or orange. Typical floor options in a modern bedroom include a narrow wooden plank floor or a concrete floor with a brightly colored rug. Carpet is uncommon in the bedroom, but a carpet with a neutral color and minimal texture works in a modern style bedroom.

Color Styles

Much of the modern decor trend revolves around the creation of simplicity. Fabrics are used to introduce color and personality to a modern bedroom. Choose curtains in bright colors with a repetitive geometric design to cover large windows. Choosing curtains in solid colors that contrast with the color of the bedroom wall creates a dramatic effect. Keep the fabrics throughout the room coordinated. For example, order custom window treatments that match your bedspread. Select carpets and wall colors that are in the same color family. Introduce random bursts of color in the bedroom with throw pillows, lampshades and side table covers.
