Get A Water Stain Out Of An Upholstered Dining Chair

Dining chairs typically come in sets, so when one becomes damaged, it is important to remove the stain as quickly as possible. A permanent stain can leave you with the expensive options of either replacing the set of dining chairs, or reupholstering the entire set. Dry cleaning facilities and retail stain removal products are options, but these can be expensive as well. Instead consider using a few homemade stain removal solutions that are both inexpensive and easy to find.

Absorb the Stain

It is important to absorb the spilled water before it has a chance to set into the upholstered fabric. Use a dry cloth or paper towels to absorb as much of the fluid as possible. Most times this will prevent a stain from forming, and leave your dining chair in it's original condition. Make sure to blot the stain as rubbing can cause the stain to spread to other areas of the fabric that have not been affected by the water spill.

Baking Soda

Baking soda works to both absorb water and deodorize. This is especially important for upholstered dining chairs that have thick padding as the water that has absorbed to the padding can cause a mildew scent if not handled properly. Blot away as much of the fluid as possible; then sprinkle a thick layer of baking soda over the affected area. Let it sit for five minutes; then work the baking soda into the fabric with a cloth or soft brush. Let it sit for another ten minutes, and vacuum the area to collect any leftover baking soda residue.

Vinegar

A simple solution of vinegar and water also breaks up stains caused by water damage. Using a spray bottle, mix one cup of warm water with one cup of white vinegar. Spray directly onto the stained area then rub it in with a soft cloth or soft brush. Let it sit for five minutes; then wipe away with a damp cloth to remove any excess vinegar. The vinegar also works as a disinfectant, which will prevent bacteria from building up around the stained area. Pre-treating the area with a baking soda solution, then following with the vinegar solution, will make the cleaning process twice as effective.
